SPECIALTY OVERVIEW

What is Neurology?

Neurology is the medical specialty dedicated to the study and treatment of disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. These complex systems serve as the command center for your entire body, controlling everything from movement and sensation to thought and memory.

As neurologists, we are specialists who help diagnose, manage, and treat chronic conditions or sudden changes in nervous system function. We understand that neurological symptoms can feel overwhelming, which is why Northern Neurology is committed to providing a compassionate, reassuring environment. Our goal is to offer clarity, expert guidance, and a personalized path forward for every patient who walks through our doors.

Conditions We Treat

Migraines & Headaches

Recurrent, intense head pain often accompanied by nausea or high sensitivity to light and sound.

Seizures & Epilepsy

Neurological disorders characterized by abnormal brain activity leading to unprovoked seizures.

Multiple Sclerosis

A chronic condition where the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerves in the CNS.

Parkinson's Disease

A progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement, often causing tremors and stiffness.

Essential Tremor

A neurological condition that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking, most commonly in the hands.

Stroke

Occurs when blood flow to the brain is reduced, requiring specialized care to manage post-injury recovery.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

A progressive disease affecting motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, impacting muscle control.

Peripheral Neuropathy

Damage to the peripheral nerves, often causing numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hands and feet.

Bell's Palsy

Sudden, usually temporary weakness in facial muscles resulting from damage to the facial nerves.

Ataxia

A neurological condition causing a lack of muscle coordination during voluntary activities like walking.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome

A rare disorder where the immune system attacks nerves, often following a viral or bacterial infection.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a brain and developmental disorder. One in 54 children will be diagnosed with ASD.

Electromyography (EMG)

Measures the electrical activity of muscles and nerves. Used to diagnose neuromuscular diseases, determine causes of muscle spasms or cramps, and evaluate nerve damage after injury or surgery.

Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)

Measures how quickly electrical signals travel through nerves using small electrical pulses. Used to diagnose peripheral neuropathy, Guillain-Barré Syndrome, and nerve injuries from trauma.
